In the bustling and culturally rich city of Kumasi, we hosted a unique creative photo walk that focused on the interplay between natural and artificial light, using a model to explore the nuances of portrait photography. We brought together a community of passionate photographers eager to enhance their craft. Guided by the expertise of Asapfotography, the focus of the walk was on developing a photographer’s eye and enhancing their skills in lighting and composition, bringing a fresh perspective to their portrait work.
Asapfotography, master at utilizing light to create stunning visuals, led the session. He
demonstrated how natural light can be effectively used to create soft, flattering portraits
and how strategic use of artificial light can add drama and focus to images. Whether
maximizing the golden hour's warm glow or using flash and reflectors to create mood,
participants learned to adapt to different lighting situations creatively
Having a model present added a practical dimension to the learning experience. Creatives had the opportunity to direct and pose the model in both natural and artificially lit settings, allowing them to see in real-time how different lighting conditions affect the mood and tone of portraits. This hands-on approach to portraiture helped the creatives understand how to communicate with their subjects and bring out their best features through careful lighting and positioning.
The walk fostered a collaborative learning environment where photographers of all levels could exchange tips and insights. As they worked with the model and experimented with various lighting setups, participants were able to provide feedback and learn from each other's experiences, building a supportive creative community
At the end of the day, photographers reviewed their work and shared their favorite images. The variety of portraits captured during the session highlighted the creativity and skills each participant brought to the walk, showcasing the striking effects that both natural and artificial light can have on a photograph.
This creative photo walk in Kumasi was a fantastic opportunity to blend practical skills with creative exploration. By working with Asapfotography, and the model, the attendees not only enhanced their technical abilities but also gained confidence in directing and lighting portraits. As we continue our series, we look forward to more exciting opportunities to share knowledge, inspire innovation, and strengthen our vibrant creative community across Ghana.
