Introduction:
Embarking on a 5-day road trip to the northern regions of Ghana was not just a photographic
assignment but an immersive adventure into the heart of rich cultural tapestry and breath-taking
landscapes. This exploratory shoot aimed to capture the unique landscapes, diverse traditions,
and vibrant communities that define this often-overlooked part of West Africa. This report
encapsulates the highlights, challenges, and overall experience of the exploratory shoot.
The journey begins
The journey commenced in the vibrant city of Accra, where the team assembled and loaded up
their vehicles with photography gear and camping essentials, then set out early for the long
drive to Tamale. En route to Tamale, the largest city in the Northern Region, the landscapes
transitioned from bustling urban scenes to the serene beauty of rural Ghana. Stops along the
way allowed for spontaneous captures of local markets, roadside vendors, and glimpses into
daily life. The day concluded with a warm welcome in Tamale, setting the stage for the
adventures to come.
Colors of the North
Tamale welcomed us with its warmth, and the day started with a visit to the Tamale,
documenting traditional dances and crafts. The intricate weaving techniques and earthy colours
of the baskets became a central theme in the day's photography. Heading further through the
town, exploring its vibrant markets and traditional architecture, local foods and beverages
providing a lovely setting for capturing the indigenous artistry.
The Tamale Paramount Chief
The Tamale Paramount Chief, also known as the Yaa Naa, is a revered traditional leader of the
Dagbon kingdom in northern Ghana. The history of the Tamale Paramount Chief is rich and
significant. One of the most notable figures in Dagbon's history is Ya Na Yakubu Andani II.
The history of the Tamale Paramount Chief is intertwined with the complex socio-cultural and
political dynamics of the Dagbon kingdom. It's a story of leadership, tradition, and the ongoing
efforts to resolve conflicts and build a peaceful future for the people of Dagbon.
Cultural immersion
Mognori Eco Village, with its ancient mud-built structures, being a riverside settlement, has
traditionally relied on fishing, hunting, and agriculture for sustenance. Additionally, the town
boasts a rich heritage in herbal medicine that spans generations. Mognori offered a deep dive
into the cultural fabric of the region. The photographers engaged with locals, capturing their
daily lives, rituals, and the age-old traditions that make the Northern regions culturally distinct.
Then a tour of the Eco Village by canoe creating an element of both awe and reverence to the
day's narrative.
Wildlife and landscapes
A highlight of the trip was the safari in Mole National Park, one of West Africa's premier
wildlife reserves. Early morning and late afternoon game drives resulted in mesmerizing
wildlife shots, including elephants, antelopes, and various bird species against the backdrop of
the park's savannah and lush vegetation. The park's natural beauty and biodiversity were a
photographer's paradise with the sunset over the Mole River providing a magical finale to the
day's shoot
Red Clay Studios

for local artists and artisans in the Northern region of Ghana. Established in 2010, it was
founded by a group of talented ceramic artists who shared a passion for pottery and a vision

the rich red clay soil that is perfect for ceramics. From its humble beginnings, Red Clay Studios
